1. What is Healthy Eating QR code project?

This project aimed to suggest an alternative method for helping people to find access to the necessary nutrition information about the meals and the foods they consume daily. This project that is a pending US patent (Application No. 495963) is based on converting the routine nutrition fact labels to particular QR codes. At first let review two concepts: Nutrition fact label and QR code.

 

2. What is The Nutrition Facts Label?

The nutrition facts label (also known as the nutrition information panel, and various other slight variations) is a label required on most packaged food in many countries. Most countries also release overall nutrition guides for general educational purposes. In some cases, the guides are based on different dietary targets for various nutrients than the labels on specific foods. The illustration show a sample nutrition label in English. These tables contains product-specific information (serving size, calories, and nutrient information). Also they contains a footnote with Daily Values (DVs) for 2,000 and 2,500 calorie diets. This footnote provides recommended dietary information for important nutrients, including fats, sodium and fiber. The footnote is found only on larger packages and does not change from product to product.(1)

3. What is QR code?

QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode) first designed for the automotive industry in Japan. A barcode is an optically machine-readable label that is attached to an item and that records information related to that item. The information encoded by a QR code may be made up of four standardized types ("modes") of data (numeric, alphanumeric, byte / binary, kanji) or, through supported extensions, virtually any type of data.(2) Typically, a smartphone can be used as a QR-code scanner, displaying the code and converting it to some useful form (such as a standard URL for a website, thereby obviating the need for a user to type it into a web browser)

 

4. Objective of Healthy Eating QR code project


This project has three parts. First we will provide a search engine that will enable the users to search within more than 8000 foods' nutrition labels based on US food and agriculture organization and then see and store the QR code of that food. These QR codes are in two formats of online and offline. The online Health QR codes would provide a link to the page showing the full and classic nutrition fact label of that food. The offline Health QR Code shows a text version of the nutrition fact label that is readable easily. These QR codes can be printed and adhered to the food products or even in the refrigerator to be scanned by a barcode scanner App of the smartphones. This will give an opportunity to the consumers to find access to the nutrition data of the foods easily. for more information see the Sample QR code page.

 

5. The future of the project

The good news is that the special Apps with scanners that add the data of these QR codes to the daily consumed foods of the user and to calculate the total amount of calorie and nutrients. By now the Apps like myNetDiary to this by scanning the classic numeral barcodes of the foods stored in the online database connected to the App. The disadvantage of these Apps is need to internet connection for the mobile phones and also linkage of all available foods in a country to their barcodes. This makes this feature of these Apps country specific. But the Healthy QR code enable the users to scan and add the nutrition fact label to their smartphone App.

Healthy Eating QR code generator

In the case that the food is not found in the database by search engine or for homemade foods and meals, you can use the Healthy QR-code generator form. This form after manual entry of the content of the nutrition fact label, will produce a page and an online QR code for it. This option does not make offline QR code.
